Welcome to Saffron Walden Liberal Democrats
From the next General Election, Saffron Walden Constituency will be composed of the District of Uttlesford plus the Broomfield & Writtle area in the Borough of Chelmsford. Here, in the north-west of Essex, Liberal Democrats are the only party seriously challenging the Conservatives. In all recent elections (District, Borough, County, Parliamentary and European) Liberal Democrats finished ahead of Labour.
Conservatives Open Floodgates to Massive Housing Development in Uttlesford
Following the enthusiastic support of Uttlesford Council's ruling Conservative councillors for a 3000-house eco-community near Elsenham, the Labour government has proposed a 5000-house eco-community for the site. These 5000-plus houses may well be on top of the 4200 new houses that the government has already foisted on Uttlesford. If the government proposal goes ahead, the original 4200 new houses may well have to go elsewhere in the District.

TORIES EXAGGERATED UTTLESFORD'S FINANCIAL PROBLEM. TORY BUDGET SERIOUSLY WRONG AS SERVICES DETERIORATE
Mon 23rd Jun 2008
Uttlesford's Liberal Democrat councillors are to ask searching questions on Thursday about the council's financial results for 2007/08 announced this week. The council's net expenditure in 2007/08 was within 1% of the budget that the Lib Dem administration set in February 2007. The Lib Dems want to know why the revised budget set by the Conservatives later in the year was out by 5% and why £1.2 million of council reserves that the Tories claimed would be drained away were not needed.

Consensus On New Towns - A Good Start, But More Pressure Needed To Change Plan
Wed 18th Jun 2008
Uttlesford's environment committee last night (Tuesday 17 June) affirmed the council's opposition to government inspired eco-towns at Elsenham and Hinxton, Cambs. The committee agreed an amendment proposed by Councillor Catherine Dean of the Liberal Democrats to strengthen the Council's opposition to the Elsenham scheme, saying it was not a brownfield site and that government and developer claims of good access to the location were nonsense.
