It was agreed by the Liberal Democrat District Council last month to restore grants to towns over 1,000 populations, which were cancelled by the previous Tory administration. Towns such as Saffron Walden, Stansted, Dunmow and Thaxted are set to receive grants this month towards vitally needed community projects. One such project was to provide disabled toilets at the Foakes Hall, Dunmow.

Dunmow Cllr Silver said, "This would not have been possible without the changes we have made."

Commenting on the figures Leader of the Council Mark Gayler said, "Nowhere has there been more difference between the current and previous administration policy on the District Council than in the allocation of grants to local communities. Community project grants were cut by £16,175, and parish councils over 1,000 population were ineligible to apply. We have reversed this situation."
